This adapter permits a candelabra-base bulb (also called E12 base) to be used in an intermediate base (E17) socket.  The adapter screws on to the base of the candelabra base bulb, then screws in to the intermediate base socket.  The adapter is removable and reusable, and adds about 0.2" to the overall length of the bulb.
