Notes on Dimmable CFL Compatibility & Performance
Dimming Ability
-
With the exception of 25000-hour ("cold cathode") CFLs, the dimming ability of dimmable CFLs varies depending on the type of dimmer control with which they are used. The best dimming ability is obtained with standard rotary and slider-controlled dimmers (with or without an on/off toggle control). With these types of controls, dimmable CFLs can usually be dimmed to about 40% of full brightness. In contrast, most push-button or remote-controlled dimmers (such as most dimmers built-in to ceiling fans) are not able to dim dimmable CFLs. There is no risk in using dimmable CFLs with these types of controls; the bulbs will always operate at full brightness.
-
25000-hour ("cold cathode") CFLs
have good dimming ability with all types of dimmer controls, including remote-controlled and push button/touch controls. Cold cathode CFLs can usually be dimmed to about 30% of full brightness using any type of dimmer control.
Installation / Usage Recommendations for Dimmable CFLs*
* Excluding 25000-hour (cold cathode) types.
- If two or more bulbs are controlled by a single dimmer, it is recommended that all of the bulbs be of the same wattage and model. This will help ensure consistent dimming behavior among all of the bulbs. It is not recommended to mix CFL and incandescent or halogen bulbs on the same dimmer, as the dimming performance will be very inconsistent.
- When you first install and turn on the dimmable CFL bulbs, it is strongly recommended to keep them turned on at 100% brightness for a minimum of 1 hour. This initial "burn in" operation will help optimize dimming performance.
- Each time that you use the bulbs (after the initial burn-in), allow the bulbs to come to full brightness (about 30 seconds after turning on) before adjusting the brightness if desired. Brightness adjustment may be inconsistent if the bulbs do not start out at full brightness.
- At the lowest end of the dimming range, brand-new dimmable CFL bulbs may vary somewhat in dimming behavior. As the bulbs burn in and age, the dimming behavior at the low end will become more uniform.
